The word Iguaçu in Portuguese, is a term derived from the Tupi-Guarani that means Big Water. It is precisely for this reason that the destination is recognized worldwide for its large expanses of water that can be seen in the Iguaçu River, the natural paradise of the Falls and the impressive Itaipu Dam, forming the three main tourist attractions at that place.
Foz de Iguaçu is located on the border of Brazil with Paraguay and Argentina sharing with this last, part of the falls and joining Paraguay through the Friendship Bridge that takes you directly to Ciudad del Este. Since those countries are only separated by the mouth of the Iguaçu River, is very common for tourists coming to Brazil to combine their vacation with a pass through the border towns of these countries.
This is one of the most important tourist centers of Brazil requested not only by tourists from other South American countries, but for tourists from all over the world and we all want to meet these natural spectacles that impact only just by seing them in a photograph. The city also has an excellent hotel infrastructure, fast and safe transport services, counseling centers and tour operators offering tours for a few days in which you can know the whole wonderful Foz de Iguaçu.
The Itaipu Dam
The Itaipu Dam is located on the Parana River on the border between Uruguay and Brazil, is the second largest hydroelectric in the world, it has a dam of about 7,919 m, which is enclosed by an enormous wall created with rocks and concrete. Upon the appointment in 1995 as one of the Seven Wonders of the Modern World, it became a must if you go to Foz de Iguazu, since nobody wants to miss the opportunity to learn about this majestic power plant, which in 2009 celebrated its 15 million visitors. Itaipu Dam can be seen from the Friendship Bridge, but the fact that the tour of the complex is admirable, climb up to the central gazebo or walk down the concrete wall, are just some of the activities that can be performed following the Production Building where a manager will show you how everything works. Moreover, when the night is falling, the dam turns all the lights on, forming a landscape that impresses every tourist.
Waterfalls
Although this is a tour that you shouldn't miss, the biggest attraction in Foz de Iguaçu are the falls which are shared with Argentina. A dream landscape that is one of the most impressive natural spectacles in the world, over 300 waterfalls falling sharply from about 80 feet, splashing hundreds of tourists who visit it every day and compensating them with a rainbow as background of this unforgettable postcard. Although from the Argentina side of the waterfalls count is much higher, the truth is that since Brazil those are best appreciated because they offer tours closer, inviting the tourist to be part of all this wonder.
The Garganta del Diablo (Devil's Throat) is one of the most amazing waterfalls since it has steam vents that can be seen from a distance of more than 7 km. Around this waterfall we can find viewpoints that offer excellent views to tourists that, if you dare, you can also enter for a walk through the nature trails of the forest boundary.
National Park
Then we can walk through the 185 hectares of the Iguaçu National Park was named as the Natural Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986. In this protected area, it can fully appreciate the fauna and flora of Foz de Iguaçu by means of nature walks or riding in vehicles 4x4 seeing tapirs, toucans, jaguaretés, alligators and many coatis, animals that are not limited to walk through the forest but also interact with the tourists who are visiting the park.
Macuco Safari offers visitors views across the area with hiking and boats that enter the rapids of the falls, passing through canyons and below the falls. An adrenaline-filled tour for visitors that make the holiday an unforgettable experience. Although if you prefer to know all this from afar, nothing better than a helicopter ride to see the landscape from above.
